I belong to a great Mom’s of Multiple club. I have met a lot of great women there and have made friends that will last a long time.
Twice a year, they have a sale. Members only can sell their gently used clothing, toys, you name it that has to do with a child you can sell there. Each year I have made out well, buying my girls toys and almost enough clothing to last the season for around $150 total.
Well this year I was REALLY disappointed. Seems that each year the pickings get smaller and the clothing or toys are more worn down. Also, I’m not sure if it is because the sizes are going up but the prices of alot of things were a lot as well. A fleece sleeper that looks like more than one child used was $3.00. I would not have paid more than $1.00 for it and even then I would have had to think about it. Also where the tables used to be jammed pack, they were empty.
I did manage to get a few pretend toys and some dress up dresses for the girls as well as a few pairs of jeans, some tops and a few sleepers. But I’m no where near done with their fall/winter clothes. DH made me sell their coats from last year. Of course they would have not fit Viviana or Olivia but Cora could have wore one of them. But no he made me sell them all so as of right now, the girls still need a light fall jacket and a winter coat.
I HOPE to take them out more often this year so I know it will be needed. Thanks for letting me vent. At least with the sale over, I know what I need to look for in the stores. Before the sale, I was afraid to pay retail for anything in hopes to get it cheaper at the sale.
Does anyone else here buy used for their kids? Or does everyone by retail and just wait for a sale?

Sorry the sale wasn’t what you expected.
I hardly ever have to buy retail, because my sister has provided me with tons of clothes from her girls. And…I used to buy huge lots of clothes on ebay when they were all small babies. I just can’t see spending tons of money, when they grow out of them so fast. And then of course, they do get many new things, but those always come from my MIL, she usually buys them several outfits each about twice a year, so that’s a HUGE help.

I have been lucky receiving clothes from my SIL for my twin girls. My niece is about a year ahead of them, so it works out well. Also, this summer I started heading to garage sales. I hit city wide garage sales that are well organized and scour through the advertisements for houses that have listed children’s clothing. Also, I keep an inventory on an excel spreadsheet of the type of clothing that I have in different sizes so that I know what I am missing before I go shopping. I was very disappointed with consignment shops because like you, I don’t want to spend more than a $1 on one piece of used clothing. I can go to Target and spend $3-4 on a NEW shirt.

cynthia - i never pay retail - for example, i just spent $55 dollars at childrens place and got sarah and samantha each 8 outfits for next summer - it averaged out to around $2.50 per piece and that was BRAND NEW. I try to do that at the end of every season. All their fall/winter stuff for this year, i bought on clearance from last year. Once i’m done with them, i give them to a friend of mine who has twin girls exactly one year younger than sarah and samantha. The few “multiples” sales i have been to have also been pretty disappointing. you should also try ebay - i just spent 42 dollars on 10 pairs of jeans for jordan, which all looked to be in good condition.
do you have any consignment shops in your area? we have one which seems to be good for finding bargains as well -

Heather, I think I’m going to hit Childrens Place some time this week. The great thing about my triplets is that Cora (the oldest) is usually a year behind Olivia and Viviana. So she will be wearing this winter what they wore last winter. So if I go to a clearance sale and buy pretty much anything, someone will wear it.
I do have to still get them winter and fall jackets and some winter boots.
I’m glad that I’m not the only one that doesn’t mind handle me downs (I get some from my SIL and some from a neighbor friend) or buying used. We do have a great store “Once upon a child”. It is a kind of place that if you need clothes you need to go there once a week to get the good stuff.
I had tried to sell my girls old stuff and I sold about half. So I hope to have made some money for the Spring/summer sale which will happen in Feb 2009.
Thanks for the tips ladies, I knew I would be able count on you.

Sorry the sale was a bummer.
My little guys have lots of hand-me-downs from Owen. I usually hit the big sales at Children’s Place and Old Navy, too. We’re so lucky that our parents get lots of clothes for our kids at the start of each season. The consignment/resale stores around here aren’t the best so I can usually get brand new stuff for the same price without having to take time to go bargain hunting. If we had some good options I’d definitely buy secondhand.

That stinks that it dodn’t go so well… We have our Mom’s of Multiples sale at the end of September. I did OK at the last one (it was my first) and since I know what to expect, I expect to do better the next one. I personally think that as the kids get older they tend to out grow at a slower pace, hence the clothes are more worn. I have a ton (OK like 26 or more) outfits still with tags that my twins have outgrown… But I expect we (parents) get smarter on getting more use out of them too… lol.. WELL.. I wish you happy hunting, for I’m sure there are some great second hand stores out there and great sales coming up..with some fall and winter clothes for your girls..

Man, that’s disappointing!! Our sale is huge, one of the biggest and best in Denver, and we look forward to it all year.

I do both. When I have time, I love to check out garage sales. The kids grow out of things so fast, I don’t see the point of spending a lot on clothes unless it’s for a holiday or something special

Tomorrow a local church is having their annual yard sale. Last year I paid $5 for a bag which was rather large and you can put whatever you want in it. I hope to get my girls some more clothes. Then I should be done. Wish me luck, it starts at 7am so I’m hoping to get there ASAP, but it is already midnight so I’m not off to a good start. LOL
